Preview: Wycombe Wanderers

Tuesday night see’s Wycombe Wanderers come to Suffolk of the back of a one nil win against Doncaster Rovers. The Chairboys currently sit at the top of the Sky Bet League One table on 39 points having only lost 1 league game this season.

Wycombe scraped a victory late on against a tricky 10-man Doncaster side. They showed a team spirit which has been ever present so far this campaign, to get a goal late on against a very organised Darren Moore team. On Tuesday evening we can expect our opponents to play a physical style of football which has been described as ‘horrible’ by opposition fans, they are going to come to Portman Road with the intent of bullying us of the ball and frustrating our players and supporters. It’s got all the marks to be one of those scrappy cold midweek games, which sees the side that wants it more, come away with three points.

Gareth Ainsworth is in the hot seat at Adams Park and has been since 2012, he took the Buckinghamshire side up from League Two into League One back in 2018. Despite many links away from the club to the likes of Reading, Lincoln and Huddersfield he has remained loyal to Wycombe working wonders on a low budget. Since recently, Wycombe were a fan owned club who had a very modest budget. Ainsworth relied on a lot of discarded players from other clubs who were picked up on free transfers such as the notorious Adebayo Akinfenwa, who has netted 42 goals since he joined the club in 2016.

A name which town fans might recognise is Wycombe skipper, Matt Bloomfield. Matt was born in Felixstowe and grew up in the county coming through the Ipswich youth system. However, he only made 1 senior appearance for the blues, before moving to the Chairboys in 2003. He is Wycombe’s current longest serving player with a total of 507 appearances, scoring 39 goals.Going into the game on Tuesday night, Paul Lambert has not confirmed whether James Norwood or Kane Vincent-Young will feature. Vincent-Young is said to be closer to returning to action then Norwood, however both trained at the back end of last week. Kayden Jackson worked hard on Saturday during our 2-2 draw with Blackpool but struggled to get possession of the ball due to his isolation. When Norwood and Jackson have played alongside each other this season, we have looked a more dangerous side. Kane has also impressed with his fast pace and dribbling, already scoring two goals in an Ipswich shirt
